HAVEN HIGH INTERIM WEEK TAKES STUDENTS OUT OF CLASS AND INTO LIFE
During one week in March, Haven High students were about everywhere except in their normal classrooms at school. The schools 260 students could be found camping out in Oklahoma, exploring space at the Kansas Cosmosphere, volunteering with the American Red Cross and touring art museums across the state.
These activities are part of Haven High School’s Interim Week, where students enjoy a weeklong experience of “seeing things, doing things they wouldn’t normally get to do in a regular classroom”. Teachers pick a topic they feel the students would be interested in studying then design a weeklong course schedule. They can also choose to job-shadow a professional, perform community service or study an area of interest not in the school’s curriculum. The interim week program has been offered each year since 2000 during the week after spring break. Students provide their own funding for their project during interim week.

SPRING SPORTS UPDATE:
GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAMHAS EXCELLENT YEAR WITH A 17-5 RECORD-FOUR PLAYERS ON ALL LEAGUE TEAM
With an excellent 17-5 record and league championship, Coach Roper had hoped to go to state but was assigned to the tough Andale regional where the host team eventually won the state championship. On an individual basis the team achieved outstanding recognition. The MCAA All-League Basketball Team was dominated by the Wildcats with four members of the team selected on the first and second teams. Morgan Skomal, Haven’s leading scorer and rebounder with 12.3 points and 7.4 rebounds per game, was a unanimous first team selection. She also had 2 assists and 2 steals per game. The All-League Second Team included Paula Stucky and Becca Achilles. Stucky had a scoring average of l8.2 points and led the team with 3.2 steals and 2.4 assists per game. Achilles put up 7.8 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game. A fourth Wildcat receiving recognition was Senior Emily Ostlund who was selected Honorable Mention. Three will be returning for their senior year and hope to lead the team to the state tournament and hopefully, a state championship for Haven.
BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM COMES ON STRONG AND PLACES TWO ON ALL LEAGUE TEAM
The Wildcats finished the season very strong by winning four of their last seven games and led number 1 seeded Hesston until the final 5 minutes of the sub state tournament. The Wildcats placed two on the all league team with Junior Cory Hatchel selected to the second team and Garrett Black, Senior, receiving honorable mention. Hatchel is expected to lead the Wildcats to a higher level in 2008-2009. The 6’ 3” junior led the Wildcats in scoring with 12.8 points per game and 6.1 rebounds. During the summer, Cory has been participating in basketball camps and has received recognition from colleges as a recruit after graduation. The Wildcats coach for the 2008-2009 season will be Lonnie Paramore, former coach at Fairfield for many years. Lonnie will bring experience and enthusiasm to the Wildcats as they look forward to a good season in the next school year.
GIRLS SOFTBALL TEAM PLACES SIX WILDCATS ON THE ALL-LEAGUE TEAM
The outstanding girls softball team, with a record of 15-5, was one of the best ever fielded at Haven. Four of their losses were by only 1 run. While hoping to return to the state tournament, the Wildcats lost in the sub state at El Dorado . While the record speaks for itself, the team also had many excellent players who were named to the All-League team. Four players, Erin Schmidt, pitcher, second baseman Lindsay Doyle, outfielder Kari Johnson and utility player Noell Nordstedt were named to the first team. Schmidt, who pitched every game for the Wildcats, threw 107 strikeouts in 131 innings and finished the season with a 1.39 ERA. From the batters box, she hit .358. As a senior, she hopes to lead the Wildcats to an even better record in 2009. Doyle crushed a team high 15 extra base hits, 30 RBI’s and a slugging average of .711. Even Babe Ruth would have marveled at that achievement. Johnson tied Doyle with three triples and three home runs and scored a team leading 27 runs. Norstedt led the Wildcats in batting with a .478 average. Shortstop Paula Stucky and Mackenzie Allen both received honorable mention recognition.
WILDCAT TRACK TEAM QUALIFIED FOR THREE EVENTS AT THE STATE MEET
The outstanding 4 X 100 relay of Trevor Ukens, Byron Nienstedt, Garrett Black, Colby Sauer; Emily Ostland, a discus participant and Ashton Wendler in the shot put, qualified for the state track meet in Wichita in late May. Although competitive our qualifiers did not place at the state meet.
BASEBALL TEAM LOOKING TOWARD NEXT YEAR
Although achieving only a 2-14 record, the 2009 team will have several returning lettermen such as Cory Hatchel, an all league performer, and hope to improve and bring the program to a higher level.
