HHS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION TO HOST REUNIONS AND WALL OF HONOR INDUCTIONS ON OCTOBER 7

 

The annual meeting and all school reunion of the Haven High School Alumni Association will be held on October 7, 2011, with three classes (56,61,66)) holding special reunions. We have other classes who have expressed an interest but are not yet confirmed.

 

An afternoon registration and reception will begin at 1:30 at the high school with an afternoon program in the auditorium beginning at 2:45. The afternoon program will feature student presentations, high school musical groups and other program events that have not yet been confirmed.

 

The evening program will feature a dinner, presentations by each of the classes holding special reunions, the election of directors for the coming year and the induction of two Wall of Honor recipients, Harland Priddle-1948 and Gary Detter-1963.

The reunion event is open to all graduates and the general public; you don’t have to be a member of the Association to attend-just fill out the registration form included in this newsletter

 

HHS ALUMNI WALL OF HONOR SELECTIONS

 

The HHS Alumni Wall of Honor committee has selected two individuals, Harland Priddle-class of 1948 and Gary Detter-class of 1963 for induction for this year during the annual meeting on October 7; both were valedictorians for their respective classes. After graduating from Kansas State in 1952, Harland entered the United States Air Force and served over 22 year, retiring in 1974. He served 7 years overseas and completed his Air Force career serving as Deputy Director of the White House Communications Agency for the President in Washington D. C. After leaving the Air Force Harland served in a variety of positions including Kansas Secretary of Commerce and Secretary of Agriculture. Gary

graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy as an Honors Graduate in 1967. His navy assignments included service aboard 6 submarines. He was Commanding Officer on the USS Woodrow Wilson for three years. He conducted eighteen 65 day submerged patrols. After leaving the service in 1989, Gary has been a manager at 3 civilian nuclear power plants in various locations in the U. S.

 

HAVEN FALL FESTIVAL PLANNING BIG BIRTHDAY PARTY

 

On October 8, the day following the HHS Alumni annual reunion event, the Haven Fall Festival is planning a big birthday party for Kansas (125) and the state of Kansas (150) You can take in two great events in two days so we hope you will plan to be with us on October 7-8.

 

HAVEN HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI SELECTS RACHEL REICHENBERGER FOR SCHOLARSHIP

The Haven High School Alumni Association selected Rachel Reichenberger as their scholarship award winner for 2011 and presented her the award at the school awards assembly on May 2. This scholarship, offered by the Haven High School Alumni Association, will provide Rachel $300 to be used for her expenses as she enters Kansas State University in the fall to study veterinary medicine. “We are pleased to select Rachel as our 2011 scholarship award winner”, stated Verla Swindler, Chairperson of the HHS Alumni Association Scholarship Committee. “Her accomplishments and activities during her time at Haven High School are exceptional in every way”.

 

Rachel has been outstanding in academicswith a GPA of 4.0 for her four years and was first in her graduating class. She was very active in school activities and community events. She has participated in concert band, jazz band, trashcats, pep band, forensics (State qualified), music (State qualified in Flute solo), Sunflower Girls State, Letterman’s Club, varsity volleyball, officer in Art Club and KAYS Member. Rachel was selected as an Honor Scholar by Kansas University, Wichita State University and Hutchinson Community College. She was selected for National Honor Society in her junior year. Rachel’s community service activities include Mount Hope PRIDE, Mount Hope Tree Board, American Legion Women’s Auxiliary Member, Helping Hands and Adopt a Highway. Rachel was also very active in the Expanded Learning Program during her years at Haven High School. As stated in one of her recommendation letters, “Rachel is an excellent example of what is good about today’s youth and she will make the most of the Association’s Scholarship”. Rachel is thedaughter of Kevin and Barbara Reichenberger who live in Mount Hope and is one of 7 children in her family.

 

HIGH SCHOOL NEWS AND HIGHLIGHTS

 

TRACY GIDDENS LEAVES HHS-

NIENSTEDT NEW PRINCIPAL

 

Tracy Giddens, High School principal for the past four years, has accepted another position in Goddard and has resigned his position as principal at Haven High School. Tracy has done an excellent job and provided the leadership which resulted in HHS being selected by U. S. News and World Report as one of the best high schools in the nation. Marty Nienstedt has been selected to replace Tracy with Jeremiah Hobbs, former vocational agriculture instructor, promoted to assistant principal and athletic director. GOOD LUCK, TRACY. WE HAVE ENJOYED WORKING WITH YOU.

 

NIENSTEDT NAMED ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR

 

Assistant Principal Marty Nienstedt was selected as the assistant principal of the year for area IV in Kansas; an area that includes a large portion of south central Kansas. CONGRATULATIONS, MARTY.

SPORTS

 

ANDY DIRKS IN THE MAJORS

 

Andy Dirks, class of 2005, was recently promoted to a spot with the Detroit Tigers and has been doing very well. Since graduating from HHS, Andy was a standout at Hutchinson Community College and later as an All American at Wichita State. He was drafted by the Detroit Tigers and quickly moved up the ranks from minor league teams to a spot with the Tigers. CONGRATULATIONS ANDY AND GOOD LUCK.

 

GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM GOES TO STATE

 

Coach Roper and the Wildcat girls had an outstanding season with a record of 18 wins and 3 losses resulting in their first trip to the state tournament in recent years. The team was led by Rachel Miller, an all league, all area and 2 nd team 4A all state performer. Others selected for special recognition were Sage Ezell and Ashley Rogers, 2 nd team all league and honorable mention class 4A all state.

 

BOYS BASKETBALL HAD A GOOD YEAR

 

Led by all league 2 nd team guard Ridge Foster, the boys had a 13 and 8 record. Highlight of the year was winning the tough Rupp Tournament in Halstead by defeating a previously unbeaten Rose Hill team 48-41. Early in the year, they came in 2 nd at the Kingman classic losing to rival Nickerson, 55-54. Kevin Bontrager and Dylan Snodgrass were selected honorable mention all league and class 4A honorable mention.

 

TRACK TEAM PLACES 6 IN STATE MEET

 

Six Wildcat thin clads qualified for the state meet in Wichita. The group was lead by Katie Ostlund , state champion in the javelin. Others participating included the 4 X 800 relay team of Madison Caffrey, Ella Matteson, Sydney Stephan and Hailey Davis who placed 10 th. Madison Caffrey also placed 12 th in the 800 meter run. The lone boys qualifier was Kevin Marks who placed 8 th in the 1600 meter run.

 

HAVEN SOFTBALL TEAM HAS GOOD SEASON

 

The HHS Girls Varsity softball team had an excellent year with a record of 13 wins and 7 losses. Led by all state, all league and all area performer, Rachel Miller, reached the regional finals but lost to rival Buhler. Others receiving honors included first team all league were sophomore Jess Shadoin. Second team honors went to MacKenzie Rohling and Hannah Jeffery. Rachel will continue her softball activity with Hesston in the Fall.

 

ART

Linda Morgan has continued to bring an outstanding art curriculum to HHS. Her students this year received many honors & awards. League awards this year included Rachel Reichenberger : Acrylic Painting- Honorable Mention; Tate Trasner: Junk Gladiator- Honorable Mention, Boris Sculpture- Honorable Mention, Hand Sculpture- Gold Medal, Bri Shores: Woman Behind the Burka- Mixed Media- Gold Medal & Best of Show, Abby Ausherman: Self Portrait- Honorable mention. Linda’s students received awards at every event this year. MUSIC

 

BAND CONTINUES TO BE ONE OF BEST IN THE STATE

 

Brad Shores continues to produce great band units at HHS. The concert band received a I Superior rating at league and state again this year. The Dallas trip resulted in many awards including the highly coveted “Esprit Des Corps” trophy. Marching band also continues to bring home top honors with I ratings at every competitive event. Steel Drum group was “sought after” for many events including the KNEA convention in Wichita, Wichita State steel drum concert and the Dallas music festival in May. The Jazz Ensemble also received I rating at the league event and two musicians were selected for special awards.

 

CHORAL GROUPS BRING HOME HIGH HONORS

 

Wildcat Singers and Chorale, under the leadership of Scott Hay, continue to bring I ratings at all contests. The Wildcat Singers traveled to St. Louis in late march and participated during their 4 day trip. The Chorale had four all state choir selections. Mr. Hay also teaches Stage Production and Music theory; one of the few high schools offering these courses.

 

FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT TAKES ADVANTAGE OF YEAR AT HHS

Philipp Lossie lives in a small village in Germany with approximately 2000 people called Immenrode. It is located near a larger city named Goslar. Immenrode is in Central Germany which is in the state called the " Lower Saxony". During his time at HHS, Philipp participated in football in the Fall, basketball in the winter and track in the spring. He finished his outstanding year at HHS by accruing enough credits to graduate on May 14. His parents came from Germany to attend the graduation. During his time at HHS he lived with Matt and Deborah Fritz on the Priddle homestead near Haven.

FORENSICS HAD BUSY AND SUCCESSUL YEAR

Under Coach Couelha, the forensics team participated in 8 different events plus the regional event. They qualified 6 students for the state tournament. Highest ratings were received by Nick Tennant and Tate Strasner with Tate placing 1 st in two events and Nick placing 1 st in 1 event. One of their strongest events was the Lyons Tournament on April 25 where they placed first out of 18 schools participating .

5:45-7:00: Dinner in the Commons area of the High School- Following dinner, the Association will hold a very brief meeting to elect directors for next year followed by special presentations by the classes holding reunions. Wall of Honor induction of Gary Detter (63) and Harland Priddle (48) will conclude the evening.

 

7:00 -until? On your own for class activities, just plain relaxing with friends
