HAVEN HIGH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION SETS DATE FOR ANNUAL MEETING AND REUNIONS

 

The all school reunion and annual meeting of the Haven High School Alumni Association will be held on October 7, 2011, with several classes, making plans for the event. As in past years, an afternoon registration and reception will begin at 1:30 at the high school with an afternoon program in the auditorium beginning at approximately 3:00. Although not finalized, we are planning on an afternoon program which will feature musical numbers, presentations by student groups and a review of Haven High Today. The evening program will feature presentations by each of the classes holding special reunions, the election of directors for the coming year and the induction of this year’s Wall of Honor inductees. The reunion event is open to all graduates and the general public; you don’t have to be a member of the Association to attend-just fill out the registration form included in this Newsletter and return to the HHS Alumni Association, P. HAVEN HIGH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION NOW ACCEPTING NOMINATIONS FOR THE WALL OF HONOR

 

The Haven High Alumni Association has announced they are now accepting nominations for the Haven High School Wall of Honor program. Those selected will be inducted at the annual meeting of the Haven High School Alumni Association annual meeting on October 7, 2011, at the high school.

 

The Wall of Honor program was developed in 2009 by the Alumni Association in partnership with the faculty and Student Council to recognize Haven High School graduates who have achieved unusual accomplishments in their lives. These accomplishments do not have to be state or national type of activities; they could be such things as participation in volunteer programs on a community basis that has resulted in a major contribution to the community. An application form & procedures are enclosed or you can request a form by writing to the HHS Alumni Association, P. O. Box 131, Haven, Kansas 67543, calling 620-664-3304 or go to the web site, www.havenhighalumni.com, and print the forms. Nominations for the 2011 program are due no later than May 1, 2011.

 

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY SELECTED

Ten new members of the National Honor Society were selected for this year. These new members are: seniors: Kyrsten Bonine, Sage Ezell and Katie Ostlund and juniors Paige Chamberlain, Holly Laughlin, Dylan Miller, Robin Morris, Torrie Rhodes, Dylan Thiessen and Megan Yoder. Induction ceremonies were held on February 17. CONGRATULATION FOR A JOB WELL DONE.

 

FINE ARTS

 

MUSIC

The Haven Band program, under the direction of Brad Shores, continues to excel in all areas. Their annual State Fair Marching and Concert contests resulted in 1 ratings in all categories. The Wildcat Parade Marching band also received straight 1 superior ratings at the annual Andover Central Marching Festival At the league music festival on March 2, concert band, jazz ensemble and flute trio all received I superior rating.

The Jazz Ensemble is one of the best in the area and state. They attended the annual Hutchinson Community College annual jazz festival in February and played three songs. Two students, Bri Shores on steel drum and Skylar Albright on baritone sax were cited with outstanding ratings.

Choral singing groups under the direction of Scott Hay continue to be outstanding and had a very busy fall and winter with several entertaining concerts. The annual Christmas concert featuring the Wildcat Singers drew a full house and was outstanding in every respect. The Wildcat Singers and Chorale received I Outstanding ratings at the league festival on March 2.

 

Haven also had five students, Skylar Albright, Kelsey Callison, Kristen Hatchel, Zane Keller and Alyssa Parks, selected to the KMEA All State Choir.

DEBATE

The debate team was very competitive and placed 3 rd in the League Debate with the following individual team placings. Competing for the Wildcats were Carolyn Roederer, Taylor Carlson, Brendan Stade and Andrew Jones.

 

FORENSICS

This year’s forensics team has achieved lofty ratings with four students qualifying for the state contest. The Nickerson Forensics Tournament qualifying students were: Micah Schmutz, 1 st place Humorous Solo Acting and 6 th place in Prose; Marilyn Morton and Hannah Carter , 5 th in Improvised Duet Acting and Audrey Laughlin 1 st in Serious Solo Acting and 2nd place in Prose. GOOD LUCK AT STATE.

SPORTS

 

FOOTBALL

Coach Seeley’s Wildcats broke into the win column on September 13 with a 27-13 victory over Belle Plaine. Unfortunately, this was the only win of the season but two players, Ridge Foster and Trae Regier made all league with four other Wildcats named Honorable mention.

 

BOYS BASKETBALL

The Wildcats had a winning season with a 13-8 record and several outstanding games and performances. They were eliminated from the sub state by Wichita Trinity 42-20 on February 28. They were champions of the annual Adolph Rupp Tournament in Halstead beating a highly touted and talented team from Rose Hill by the score of 48-41. The Wildcats also trounced their arch rivals, Nickerson, 53-33 early in the year but lost the return contest by 47-42. . Their swarming defense and intensity kept them in every game this year. The boys concluded their season with a sub state loss to Trinity from Wichita by a score of 42-20. CONGRATULATIONS TO COACH PARAMORE AND THE WILDCATS FOR AN EXCITING AND ENTERTAINING SEASON.

 

 

GIRLS BASKETBALL-GOING TO STATE

The Haven Wildcat girl’s team had an excellent season and was ranked in the top ten in the state most of the year. Their 20-3 season placed them as the number 1 seed in the sub state tournament which began on March 2. Our Wildcats played great at sub state and won the title. They will be playing in the state tournament beginning at 8:15 on Thursday, March 10 against Ottawa. They also were Kingman tournament champs and came in 2 nd in their own Haven Classic tournament. GREAT JOB COACH ROPER AND TEAM—THANKS FOR AN OUTSTANDING SEASON.

 

CROSS COUNTRY

Cross Country boys and girls competed in 8 events as well as the league meet. The girls came in 2 nd at league and boys came in 8 th. Sophomore Maddison Caffrey led the girl’s team in the league meet and placed 2 nd among all contestants.

 

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

The Girls Volleyball team finished the season with a record of 11 wins and 24 losses. With several returning letter winners, Coach Roper is hoping for a good season in 2011.

 

FFA NEWS

The FFA judging teams continue to achieve high levels in their contests. In December, the Dairy Food team placed first in the FFA Dairy Cattle/Food career development contest. Taylor Stephan, Lexi Ensley and Savannah Pace were the participants on the team. The freshman team of Mary Fishburn, Katie Schrag, Eric Burling and Austin Fritzemeir were second in dairy foods for their division.

 

Freshman Livestock team competed well at the South Barbar livestock judging invitational. Mary Fishburn, Katie Schrage, Cody McKinnis and Annmarie Wortz received 2 nd place at the livestock judging contest. Mary also received 5 th place individual and Cody received 8 th.

 

The FFA recently received a $2500 grant from Monsanto in order to promote agriculture in and around the community. The plan for spending the grant money is to put together a farm day for all the 4 th, 5 th and 6 th grade students in the USD 312 district. Students will be bused to the Haven FFA School Farm for a day of farm education. Several local businesses will be helping present farm related lesions to the students throughout the day.

 

Syngenta along with Target Application presented the Haven FFA with a $500.00 grant. Special thanks go out to Jeff Brawner for helping the FFA receive this grant. Syngenta also presented Annmarie Wortz with an FFA Jacket as part of the grant presentation.

2:45-4:00 : Haven High Today—High School Auditorium-- Program to include the current curriculum, activities and programs at the High School. Program will consist of presentations by the many HHS teams competing n a variety of activities. Musical numbers by the outstanding music department are also being planned.

4:00-5:30: You can visit with your classmates, tour Haven or just “hang out”

5:45-7:00: Dinner in the Commons area of the High School- Following dinner, the Association will hold a very brief meeting to elect directors for next year followed by a short program including the induction of selected candidates into the Wall of Honor. Classes holding reunions will also make brief presentations.

7:00 -until? On your own for class activities, just plain relaxing with friends

HAVEN  HIGH SCHOOL  WALL OF HONOR PROGRAM

 

Haven High Graduates Are Special People

Since the initial class of 1914, over 4,000 students have graduated from Haven High School. Many of these have achieved unusual accomplishments in their lives and have received local, national and, in some instances, international recognition, for their achievements. In order to provide a recognition program for these individuals as well as inspiration to current students at Haven High School, the Haven High School Alumni Association and Student Council of Haven High School have established a Wall of Honor program.

 

What is the Purpose of the Wall of Honor Program?

To perpetuate the Haven High School tradition of excellence by honoring HHS graduates who have achieved a high level of success during their lifetime.

 

What are the eligibility requirements?

(1) Candidates must be HHS graduates ((2) Must have graduated at least 10 years prior to the nomination (3) Must have attained a high level of achievement in at least one of the following areas: Personal and/or professional life, community service and/or the demonstration of education as a lifelong experience.

 

How are honorees nominated?

A nominee must be nominated by an individual other than the person being nominated. A nomination application (copy enclosed) must be completed and forwarded to the Haven High School Alumni Association, P. O. Box 131, Haven, Kansas 67543by May 1 of each year.

 

Is there a deadline?

Nominations are accepted on an on-going basis. Those nominations not selected will be retained and considered during the next year’s selection process. Nominations will be retained for five years.

 

How many honorees are selected each year?

Up to three nominees may be selected annually for the Wall of Honor. This prestigious award is the highest honor HHS can bestow upon its graduates.

 

How are nominees selected for the Wall of Honor?

A review committee consisting of 2 Student Council members, 2 Haven High School Faculty and 2 Haven High School Alumni Association Board members will review the nominations. Notification of selection will be made by the Haven High School Alumni Association

 

Is there an actual wall?

Yes. A wall of plaques honoring each inductee will be displayed in the High School where it may inspire today's Wildcats to realize their potential and soar to new heights. Each honoree will have an individual plaque with their name and a brief summary of their achievements and descriptive information of their life’s accomplishments. A personal recognition plaque will also be given to the recipient.

How are inductees honored?

In addition to receiving a plaque to keep, Wall of Honor inductees are honored at the annual meeting of the Haven High Alumni Association and special recognition at an HHS event such as half time of a home football game.

Additional information

Nominees will not be discriminated against on the basis of race, creed, religion, sex, nationality, disability, economic status or marital status. The award may be bestowed posthumously.
