REGISTRATION FORM AND PROGRAM ARE ENCLOSED

PLANS FOR FALL MEETING AND REUNIONS IN PLACE

Our annual meeting and school reunion will be held on October 9, 2009. A schedule of events and registration form is included with this newsletter. We have several classes who are planning special reunions including 1944, 1949, 1954, 1959 and 1979 and possibly others. Also, the Wildcats are playing at home against Hesston. We are including a tentative Fall Festival schedule which will be held the day following our event .

HHS ALUMNI WALL OF HONOR PROGRAM

The HHS Alumni Wall of Honor program has been launched and initial nominations have been received. The selection committee composed of two HHS Alumni Board members, two HHS Faculty and two from the HHS Student Council will be evaluating these nominees during August with announcement prior to Labor Day. As we stated in our last Newsletter, this program has been developed to honor individuals and inspire current students to outstanding achievement in their life careers after HHS . The Wall of Honor will feature a plaque for each inductee with a brief summary of their life’s accomplishments and will be placed in a prominent location in the High School. Provided the committee selects individuals for the Hall, we are

planning to induct our first inductees at our annual meeting in October.

END OF SCHOOL YEAR HAPPENINGS

MUSIC

The HHS band competed in a St. Louis “Music in the Parks” festival and brought home high honors in many areas. Both the Concert Band and the Jazz Ensemble placed first place in their divisions. In addition, the Jazz Band was named best in class for the jazz category and Eric McGrane, guitarist, was named outstanding jazz musician of the festival.

ART ACTIVITIES

Linda Morgan, was selected by the National Art Education Association to receive the Kansas Art Educator of the year Award. This award honors an outstanding member from each state association whose service and contribution to art education merits recognition and acclaim. The award was presented at the National Art Education Association convention in Minneapolis on April 17-21, 2009. As an example of her excellent leadership, 20 students participated in the Ft. Hays High School Art Show in late April and brought home 62 awards—WOW----CONGRATULATIONS, LINDA FOR YOUR OUTSTANDING WORK AT HHS.

This program began with over 496 students from 96 high schools competing on line for the opportunity to compete in the state competition with 20 teams selected for the final. The Kansas Personal Finance Challenge is an opportunity for high school students to demonstrate their knowledge of personal finance by competing with other students across the state. The finals consisted of three rounds of competition. Maize and Haven advanced to the finals which was a quiz bowl format. GREAT JOB, TEAM.

FORENSICS

Wildcats continued to perform at high levels in forensics this past spring. Following are placings from one of their events, Smokey Valley Invitational:

ATHLETICS

SOFTBALL

After starting the season with two straight losses, the girls softball team rolled off 17 straight victories to advance to the sub state before losing in the semi finals. Erin Schmidt again led the Wildcats with her outstanding pitching which led to a scholarship to Newman University in Wichita

TRACK

Emily Ostlund had an outstanding year in the shot put and discus resulting in a second place finish in discuss at the state class 4A meet in Wichita in late May.

Although the boys track squad had no one placing at state, Trent Rhodes, Jordan Drake, Colby Sauer, Dustin Stull and Kevin Marks had good years. For example, at the Hillsboro Meet, Marks placed 2 nd in the 3200m, Rhodes was 1 st in the 1600m, Drake was 2 nd in the 100m and the relay teams of 4 X 100 and 4 X 400 took first place.

GOLF

The nine member boys golf team was loaded with underclassmen with only two seniors on the team. Barry Bontrager led the team with high placings at three of the events. Look out for next year as the Wildcats hope to continue to improve.

BASEBALL

The boys baseball team ended the year with a 5 win and 8 loss record but improved as the season progressed. Several returning lettermen should lead to an improved season in 2010.
