The Wall of Honor program was developed in 2009 by the Alumni Association in partnership with the faculty and Student Council to recognize Haven High School graduates who have achieved unusual and nationally recognized accomplishments in their lives. It also provides an example and inspiration to current students that being from a small Kansas high school does not prevent you from making a difference in your adult life’s careers.

HHS ALUMNI WALL OF HONOR INDUCTION

ACCEPTANCE SPEECH BY DR. LEON LAKE

It is great to be back once again in my home town!

When I asked my son Andi for suggestions as to what I should say here tonight in response to this honor he said, “Tell them dad how muchgrowing up in Haven has meant to you all these years – and how specialit is that yourhome town and high school have chosen you

for this honor!

Andi knew that, because he and his brother John have heard many tales about growing up in Haven some of whichbecame lectures on how to build a successful life based on the “Principles” learned and acquired here!

Well, it trulyis special to be so honored by my home town and high school!

So I want to say this evening a sincere “thank you” by sharing with you my own personal“Wall of Honor”!

My wall consists of those who mentored me during my first 18 years of my life and provided me with the foundation for a successful life!

It starts with my parents, John and Arlie, who found here in Haven a “welcoming town” in which to live and raise a family. They along with my brother, Harold, believed in me, supported me, instilled in me responsibility, and loved me unconditionally!

Then on my wall are my grade school teachers who prepared me and my classmates for high school.

-Mrs. Albright my 1 st grade teacher

-Followed by Esther and Carrie Beltz for my 2 nd and 3 rd grade years

-Next would be Mrs. Van Buren for 4 th grade

-Ms. Pietfish for 5 th grade

-Mrs. Hillman for the 6 th grade

-Then the 7 th and 8 th grade team: Miss Clausen, Esther May, Rex McMurray, Carl Elvin, John Reimer

During these formable years Dr Voth, Troop 22 Scoutmaster, was instilling in me a love for the outdoors and the Boy Scout motto, “Be Prepared”!

Next come honorees from high school days for my wall of honor.

-Art Peitsh who taught me mathematics, chemistry, and physics; foundations for my electrical engineering profession.

-Ethel Mae Wilson and Herb Reimer guiding me through the maze of the English language and teaching me writing skills so important in my career.

-Betsy Dugan who taught me speech and the art of an extemporary speech that I used throughout my AF and engineering career.

-A special place on my wall is for Jay Dodge, Jack Swinger, and Ken Shaheen who instilled in me a love for music. Also there is Jolie Cantwell, the choir director at the Congregational Church, on my wall. She has inspired me to this day to cantor, to sing in choirs, and play my trumpet in church.

-Then there are Pete Albright and Clint Hill who taught me the value and rewards of teamwork while leading us to a winning season in Mid-Kansas League Football and Basketball and a State Championship in Basketball.

-Fred Howell, the principal who asked both teachers and students for their best and truly expected their best!

-Harold Stalcup Sr. and Harry Bogner are on my wall of honor. It was from them that I acquired a strong work ethic and realized the joy that can come with the accomplishments of your labor.

Finally on my Wall is the entire Haven Community of friends and neighbors who supported the school children fully and who provided the very best for them.

This is my “Wall of Honor”! When you chose me for this honor, you chose all of them!

Soooo maybe I need some more room up there on your wall of honor!

And so I am here to say “thank you” for the honor – and for so much more.

Thank you for the special something that is so hard to “sum up”. I believe I can best relate my “thanks” by a phrase I often heard when traveling places with my father-in-law. He was a WWII veteran, in the Navy in submarines in the Pacific. He proudly wore a baseball cap declaring that he was a World War II veteran. People, complete strangers to him, would come up to him, frail at age 90 – and say “thank you for your service”. It is a simple statement, and yet a summary of all that those vets had done.

So let me now say to the Haven Community “Thank You for your service” to me and to all!

Acceptance speech for George Schlickau Induction into the HHS Alumni Wall of Honor 10/8/10

By Susan Schlickau Russell

On behalf of my family, thank you to the honor of remembering Dad’s accomplishments at HHS.

Dad received many nice honors during his life, but those from his peers were among the most cherished. So, I imagine that he is up in heaven with his dazzling smile and twinkle in his blue eyes sharing this moment with his classmates and family.

Dad had a passion for cattle and crops and people, and not necessarily in that order. He gave generously of his time and talents.

While each of us might have different memories, Dad’s advice was the same. He’d say: “Always remember who you are.” Now, looking back, I understand it was really a moral compass that he handed to my siblings & I, to the 7 exchange students we hosted and to all the 4-H & FFA youth he helped. Depending on the situation that “remember who you are” advice was relevant on our faith and family values, or that we must remember it takes drive & persevere to accomplish goals, after all, we were also told more than once “can’t died in the cornfield.”

But his advice was really just leading by example. “Your word is your bond” advice was really seen over and over when he’d sell his Hereford bulls on just a handshake.

Dad’s list of accomplishments was very, very lengthy. I edited the plaque down to a glimpse of his productive life. But the words on the plaque don’t really reflect his gregarious personality. After all, as my siblings & I can attest, we often stood waiting & waiting while he made his way toward a food line or into a room but we’d only inch along as he visited with seemingly everyone. After all, he didn’t know a stranger. Outgoing was his middle name, whether he was traveling internationally to represent the beef industry & Hereford cattle or just here in the hometown - this same hometown that his own grandfather helped settle and he spent his entire life.

Dad lost in his battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy in August 2005 but not before he and Mother had a chance to celebrate their 50 th wedding anniversary together. And even when he was limited by the rare disease, he didn’t complain or become bitter but instead lead by example that we should remember to count our blessings. And this HHS honor is another blessing. So, on behalf of my siblings, my Mother, & all his grandchildren we humbly say ‘Thank you’ – which is just what he’d say and then give his mega-watt smile.
